Getting Google Analytics 4 onto your website sounds complicated, but it doesn't have to be. Whether you're starting from scratch or migrating from the old Universal Analytics, the process follows a clear set of steps. This guide walks you through everything.
We'll cover creating a GA4 property, adding your tracking code, verifying that data is coming in, and making sure the most important events are tracked from day one.
Step 1: Create a GA4 Property in Google Analytics
Go to analytics.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Click on 'Admin' in the bottom left corner, then select 'Create Property'. Give your property a name (for example, your business name), choose your time zone and currency, and follow the setup wizard. At the end, you'll receive a Measurement ID that looks like G-XXXXXXXXXX.
Step 2: Add the Tracking Code to Your Website
There are two ways to add GA4 to your site. The first is to install the Google tag (gtag.js) directly in your website's HTML, just before the closing </head> tag. The second — and recommended — method is to use Google Tag Manager. GTM lets you add and manage your tracking without touching your website's code every time. If you're using WordPress, there are also plugins that simplify this process.
Step 3: Verify Your Setup
Once the code is live, go back to GA4 and open the Realtime report. Then open your website in a new browser tab. Within a few seconds, you should see your visit appear in the Realtime data. If you see activity, your tracking is working. If not, double-check that the tracking code is present on all pages and that no ad blockers or browser extensions are interfering.
Step 4: Set Up Key Events
By default, GA4 tracks pageviews and a handful of standard events automatically. But for your business, you'll want to track specific actions: form submissions, phone number clicks, booking completions, or button clicks. These are called conversions, and setting them up correctly is what turns GA4 from a visitor counter into a real business tool. This step often requires some technical configuration — we're happy to handle it for you.
Setting up GA4 correctly takes a bit of time, but it's worth every minute. The data you collect from day one is data you'll rely on for months and years to come. The sooner your tracking is in place, the more historical data you'll have to work with.
